Maximalist Fashion: Top Tips on How to Dress Bold, Bright & Unapologetically YOU

Apparently, I’m a maximalist, well a closet maximalist being that most of my most sparkly, bold and gorgeous pieces of (the majority vintage) clothing are still in my wardrobe waiting to see the light of day. – This is because I keep buying lots of pretty items of vintage attire that I can’t resist but are unfortunately too small for me! Sigh!

I’ve always been drawn to brightly coloured clothes, funky patterns and anything that’s just that little bit different, be it the psychedelic pattern on a 60s mini dress, the extravagant cut of an 80s vintage peplum jacket or the novelty felt embroidery on a retro 90s oversized jumper. Anything that catches the eye, that shouts ā€˜hey look I’m different!’ I’m a magpie for that shit!

It turns out that this look, this style has become rather more ’En vogue’ over the past few years and is called Maximalism. Maximalism is the general idea that more is more. Maximalist fashion is all about making a bold statement with your style. It's about mixing and matching patterns, textures, and colours to create a unique, eye-catching look that's all your own. You can be creative with your clothing, be unique and be you – no holding back.

It’s funny , sometimes when I am browsing google or an online market place to buy vintage clothing I’ll see something I like, and it turns out on further inspection to be a child’s dress or outfit – why do the kids get all of the good clothes and what is the age where they stop making fun and colourful clothing for the rest of us – it seems from my many hours of browsing that the answer is around about the age of 8. No fair!

So, my thoughts are fuck it! If I want to dress with a sense of fun and playfulness – if I want to say screw you to the conventional norms of growing up and growing old ā€˜gracefully’ (boringly) then why the hell not! I’ll wear what I want and the more bold, bright and beautiful the better! I will wear clothing that makes me happy!

If you're tired of the same old, minimalist styles that seem to dominate the fashion world, if you want to let your inner self and creativity shine through then maximalism is definitely the way to go.
Are you with me? Great!

If you're new to maximalist fashion, it can be intimidating to know where to start. One of the best ways to ease into this trend is by incorporating vintage clothing into your wardrobe. Vintage clothing adds a unique and one-of-a-kind element to your look, and it's a great way to stand out from the crowd. Plus, vintage pieces are often of higher quality and greater attention to detail than their contemporary counterparts, so you know you're getting a well-made item that will last.

You can go for bright colourful prints, novelty patterns, intricate embroidery, feathers, beading, rhinestones or a combination of anything that takes your fancy, The world is your Oyster! Don't be afraid to mix and match different eras and styles - that's part of the fun of maximalist fashion! You can also try layering vintage pieces with contemporary clothing to create a truly maximalist look. For example, you could pair a vintage maxi dress with a modern, oversized denim jacket and some chunky boots for a bohemian-inspired ensemble. Or, you could layer a vintage graphic t-shirt over a bright, patterned skirt and some statement trainers for a playful, streetwear-inspired outfit.

And don’t forget to accessorize. My favourite additions are multicoloured chunky novelty earrings, a different pair for every outfit however there are so many other ways to add to your unique look – perhaps a hat, belt or cute bag. The possibilities are endless.

No matter how you choose to wear it, maximalist fashion is all about having fun with your clothes and expressing your original style. So if you're ready to make a statement with your wardrobe, check out the wonderful selection of maximalist clothing I have carefully and lovingly curated for my vintage clothing company TRASH and please do share any photographs of your amazing outfits I would absolutely love to see the ensembles that bring you joy!

Love and light
