Apparently, Iām a maximalist, well a closet maximalist being that most of my most sparkly, bold and gorgeous pieces of (the majority vintage) clothing are still in my wardrobe waiting to see the light of day. ā This is because I keep buying lots of pretty items of vintage attire that I canāt resist but are unfortunately too small for me! Sigh!
Iāve always been drawn to brightly coloured clothes, funky patterns and anything thatās just that little bit different, be it the psychedelic pattern on a 60s mini dress, the extravagant cut of an 80s vintage peplum jacket or the novelty felt embroidery on a retro 90s oversized jumper. Anything that catches the eye, that shouts āhey look Iām different!ā Iām a magpie for that shit!
It turns out that this look, this style has become rather more āEn vogueā over the past few years and is called Maximalism. Maximalism is the general idea that more is more. Maximalist fashion is all about making a bold statement with your style. It's about mixing and matching patterns, textures, and colours to create a unique, eye-catching look that's all your own. You can be creative with your clothing, be unique and be you ā no holding back.
Itās funny , sometimes when I am browsing google or an online market place to buy vintage clothing Iāll see something I like, and it turns out on further inspection to be a childās dress or outfit ā why do the kids get all of the good clothes and what is the age where they stop making fun and colourful clothing for the rest of us ā it seems from my many hours of browsing that the answer is around about the age of 8. No fair!
So, my thoughts are fuck it! If I want to dress with a sense of fun and playfulness ā if I want to say screw you to the conventional norms of growing up and growing old āgracefullyā (boringly) then why the hell not! Iāll wear what I want and the more bold, bright and beautiful the better! I will wear clothing that makes me happy!

Or, you could layer a vintage graphic t-shirt over a bright, patterned skirt and some statement trainers for a playful, streetwear-inspired outfit.
And donāt forget to accessorize. My favourite additions are multicoloured chunky novelty earrings, a different pair for every outfit however there are so many other ways to add to your unique look ā perhaps a hat, belt or cute bag. The possibilities are endless.
